In English, if you want to talk about your nationality, your name, your personality, if you’re happy or sad, you basically use the verb “to be”. But in Portuguese, this is a bit more complex (but not impossible!).
If you haven’t taken any Portuguese classes, this might be new to you, but if you have taken some before, this might be something you might have struggled in the past. These are the two first verbs students learn in Brazilian and European Portuguese classes, and despite becoming intermediate/advanced, it takes time for students to feel extremely comfortable with it.
In Portuguese, we have two (yes, two!) verbs “to be”: Ser and Estar.

To talk about names, nationality, occupations, time, personality, descriptions, permanent situations, we use ser.
- Meu nome é Paula / Esse é Carlos, meu pai / Eu sou o Anderson
- Eles são americanos / Nós somos australianos / Eu sou italiano / Ela é chinesa
- Eu sou professora / A gente é médico / Vocês são advogados
- Eu sou alto e forte / Nós somos inteligentes / Você é incrível
- Que horas são? São 12:30 / Hoje é 13 de outubro
Now if we want to talk about what your body is feeling, temporary sensations/feelings, locations and what you’re doing now, we use estar:
- Eu estou com fome (I’m hungry – so it’s temporary)
- Ele está doente (he’s sick – so it’s temporary)
- Nós estamos cansados (we’re tired – so it’s temporary)
- Eles estão em Melbourne (They’re in Melbourne – location)
- A gente está na Europa (We’re in Europe – location)
- O telefone está na bolsa (The telephone’s in the bag – location)
- Eu estou trabalhando (I’m working – happening now)
- Eles estão jogando futebol (They’re playing football – happening now)
